Budgeting for expats in the UAE

Earning in dirhams, paying rent in advance cheques, and sending money home every month: an expat budget has moving parts most budgeting apps ignore. Here is a starting budget built for it.

What makes it different

Rent paid in a few big cheques

Many leases are paid in one to four cheques. Spread the cost: budget a monthly rent line and move it into a savings pot so the next cheque never surprises you.

Two currencies, one month

Salary arrives in AED, but family costs, loans or savings back home are in PKR, INR or another currency. Every remittance is also a currency decision.

School fees and annual costs

Fees, flights home and visa renewals arrive once or a few times a year. Divide each by twelve and set the amount aside monthly.

End-of-service is not a plan

Gratuity helps, but it is not a pension. Give long-term savings its own line from the first month.

Example budget on AED 12,000 a month

This is the starter plan BudgetByChat creates for this template. Every figure is a share of take-home pay, rounded to a tidy amount.

Set it up in five steps

  1. Start from your monthly take-home pay in AED (after any deductions).
  2. Fix the big lines first: rent (monthly share of the cheques), school fees, and the amount you send home.
  3. Add everyday spending: groceries, transport, phone and internet, dining out.
  4. Give what is left a job: emergency fund, flights home, investments.
  5. Log spending as you go and adjust next month’s plan from what really happened.
