Savings goal calculator

Two questions, one tool: how long will it take at the amount I can save, and how much do I need to save each month to get there by a date?

Worked example: an emergency fund

Say your goal is USD 6,000 and you have USD 1,000 saved. At USD 400 a month you reach it in 1 year 1 month. To get there in a year instead, you would need to save USD 417 a month.

Making the goal stick

  • Move the monthly amount on payday, before spending starts, so it is not whatever happens to be left.
  • Give each goal a name and a date: “Flights home, March” is easier to protect than “savings”.
  • Spread yearly costs (school fees, insurance, visas) the same way: divide by twelve and save it monthly.

Questions

What you still need (target minus what you have saved) divided by what you put in each month, rounded up to a whole month.

No. It assumes no return, which is the safe way to plan short goals like an emergency fund. Any profit you earn simply gets you there sooner.

A common rule of thumb is three to six months of essential spending. If your income is irregular (freelancing, commission) or you support family abroad, aim for the higher end.

In the free BudgetByChat app, yes: each goal gets its own target, date and monthly contribution, and the app tells you when one falls behind.
